SOCKS5 server

The SOCKS server allows any SOCKS compatible client to access the Internet to both connect out and listen for connections as if the client was directly connected. SOCKS can be used for most Browser functions. HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, Gopher and others all work via SOCKS in Netscape, Explorer and other SOCKS compliant Browsers.

For users with AutoSOCKS, the SOCKS proxy gives you all the proxy access without the need for any other WinGate proxies. You will probably choose to run the other WinGate services if you have servers such as Mail, FTP or WWW or if you require logging.

The port number for a SOCKS server is normally 1080.

To use SOCKS4, you must have DNS available on your LAN. DHCP will configure this. For SOCKS5, you probably will not require DNS on your LAN. SOCKS5 is supported by a number of products; WWW Browsers and other specific client applications often use SOCKS4.

In WinGate 2, the SOCKS Server is clever enough to hand over HTTP requests to the WWW Proxy to allow caching.
