Releasing and renewing a DHCP Lease

To release an IP number, on the client machine:

In 95 At the command prompt, run winipcfg, click the release all button.

In NT At the command prompt of the client computer, type ipconfig /release.

Other Clients using MS-DOS, and possibly clients using third-party operating systems, will have to restart their computers for the change to take effect. Because the clients current address is now reserved, the client is moved to a different address.

Reserving an address or changing a reservation does not force the client for whom the reservation is made to move to the reserved address. In this case, too, the client must issue a renewal request.

To renew a lease:

In 95 At the command line type winipcfg, and then select the renew all button. The DHCP server will note that the client has a reserved address and will move the client.

In NT At the command line type ipconfig /renew
