News group Applications

To operate through WinGate, the News applications described in this section require two TCP mapped links: a link to your news-group (NNTP) server on port 119 and a link to your mail-forwarding (SMTP) server on port 25. The standard port number for NNTP connections is 119 and for SMTP, 25. The WinGate set up program will create a mapped link on port 25 if a SMTP server is specified and a mapped link on port 119 if an NNTP server is specified.

Multiple News Servers

Suppose you have two news servers "news.davey.com" and "news.goliath.com". Now you can let the program default one of them so it sets up the default news server in WinGate as "news.davey.com" on port 119.

To set up the second one, pick an unused port number, say 1191. Create a TCP Mapping service in WinGate that looks just like the one on port 119 but point it at port 1191 and "news.goliath.com"

On the workstation PC, put entries in the hosts file for "news.davey.com" and "news.goliath.com" that have the same IP address as the WinGate machine.

In the newsreader software set your setup multiple news servers each configured with the correct port number.

If you want even more news servers, just add them with additional port numbers, say 1192, 1193, etc...
