Installing WinGate

Notes:

wingate200090000.gif Do not install WinGate till you have INSTALLED TCP/IP. Once TCP/IP is working on your machines you can install WinGate.

wingate200090000.gif If you are upgrading WinGate, please read the section Upgrading WinGate

WinGate 2.1 runs as a service. This means it wont appear as an application on your desktop. The files wg2eng95.exe (95) or wingateengine.exe (NT) do the actual work without interfering with the usability of your computer. The big advantage of services is that they run when Windows starts. No user has to be logged in for services to run, and the operating system does not close them down when a user logs off. The operation of services in 95 is a little different than NT, but the same basic operation is achieved.

To Install WinGate:

On the machine with a modem (or other connection to the internet):

Run the wg21NT.exe or wg2195.exe install file.

This will install WinGate, GateKeeper the client utility and various other files.

WinGate, GateKeeper, and Help files will be installed by default into the directory

C:\Program Files\WinGate\, this is configurable in the installer.

When the Install has finished, the WinGate engine will be started. Icons are added in the WinGate group for Stopping and Starting the service. Ensure the WinGate engine is running before starting to configure the client machines.

Client Machines:

Dont run the installer on client machines. Simply copy these files to a shared directory, or to each machine:

GateKeeper.exe

wingate2.hlp

wingate2.cnt

wg2util.exe

wg2auto.ini

Dont worry if the ini file is missing, the wg2util.exe program will create another.

If they wont be using GateKeeper, only copy these two files:

wg2util.exe

wg2auto.ini

The next steps follow through the install procedure.
