IP Numbers

There are a few good analogies between computers and telephones. This is a very good example. You may think of an IP number as a telephone number with all the international dialing codes attached. This means that any machine can contact any other machine using the IP number, as long as there is a path between the machines.

This also means that no two machines on the same network should be allowed to have the same number. Machines on different, unconnected networks may have the same address. Machines directly connected to the Internet must have unique IP numbers. On your network, only the WinGate machine is directly connected to the internet. This means the IP addresses on your network must all be different, but may lie in the same range as IP addresses on another WinGate network. The IP numbers you must use are called private IP addresses.

On a WinGate network, all the machines need separate IP addresses. This is achieved in two ways. We recommend using the DHCP server. The WinGate DHCP server sets up the IPs for you automatically. Alternatively, you can assign static IPs to the client machines.
