DNS

The WinGate DHCP server configures DNS automatically. Read on to find out why DNS is useful.

DNS stands for Domain Name Service. This is the method used to find a machine on the Internet. All ISPs have DNS servers. These servers match domain names eg cnn.com to their IP addresses. This means that Internet applications can look up servers by name or IP number.

DNS servers are analogous to ringing a telephone directory service. To use them, all you need to know is their IP address (this is equivalent to the phone number of directory service). You generally want to use the DNS server closest to you (the one at your ISP), because this will give you the fastest results.

In a WinGate LAN the WinGate machine obtains its DNS from the ISP you are connected to. The workstations on your LAN are not connected directly to the Internet. WinGate has a DNS server built in. The workstations use this service for their DNS.

You can use the Internet without a working DNS set up. However, not all applications will work correctly.

Qbik strongly recommend that you use DHCP to configure DNS options for your entire LAN.
